First Daughter, Malia Obama, Graduates from High School

Malia Obama, the eldest daughter of President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama, marked an enormous milestone in her life by graduating from high school, with the first family looking on.

Obama, 17, graduated from the prestigious Sidwell Friends School, a private school where the children of Washington’s political elite and international diplomats attend, in a outdoor ceremony.

Malia was just 10 when she and her family moved into the White House, therefore her graduation was a celebration of a successful Obama presidency in many ways, as she has traveled to Europe, Africa, Asia, South America and the Caribbean with her parents on several important presidential visits. Malia has also met many celebrities and high-powered people, including two popes.

Last week in a speech, President Obama joked that he will be wearing dark sunglasses and that he couldn’t speak at the graduation because he’s “going to cry.”

In true dad form, President was spotted at the ceremony wearing the dark sunglasses, rising to his feet when Malia’s name was called.

Malia announced that she will be entering Harvard in the fall of 2017, taking the year off in what is being called a “gap” year.

Michelle Obama has said her daughter has an interest in becoming a filmmaker. Malia has held summer internships on the New York set of HBO’s “Girls” and in Los Angeles on a CBS sci-fi drama that starred Halle Berry.

Malia’s graduation is good practice for the Obama family for when their youngest daughter, Sasha, who turned 15 the day of the graduation, graduates from the same school in two years. Up until that time, the Obama have said they would remain in Washington after the President leaves office at the end of the year.
