Missy and Timbaland on New Music, Drake’s Aaliyah “Obession”

The recently reunited Missy Elliott and Timbaland took to the airwaves in New York this week with an appearance on Angie Martinez’s Hot 97 Radio show. The appearance was to mark the online release of two new singles, “9th Inning” and Triple Threat,” but the focus quickly turned to the controversy surrounding rapper Drake’s interest in the late R&B singer Aaliyah, and her upcoming posthumous album.

Just last week, rapper DMX expressed his disapproval with the project, now it was Missy and Timberland, the producers and songwriters behind most of Aaliyah’s hit songs and albums, to weigh in on the topic.

“It’s not records that already done came out, we’re talking about unfinished music,” said Missy, whose last album was released in 2005. “And we don’t know what her reasoning for not putting those records out. Maybe she didn’t feel like they were her best work. We just don’t want to tap into that, just spiritually something else you know…..very very touchy.

Missy added that she could be open to working on the project if Aaliyah’s parents consented to the album.

Drake’s rumored “obsession” with Aaliyah is heightened by a tattoo he has of the late singer, whom he has never met. Drake is also featured on the first single, “Enough Said” off the Aaliyah’s expected album.

Missy and Timberland have performed their new collaborations at special events across the country, including at a performance at the Hennessy White Rabbit launch in New York last Spring. (See Human Nature video below) Both singles are set to appear on Missy’s upcoming album, tenatively titled Block Party, due later this year. The duo is also working on Timbaland’s fourth solo album, “Shock Value III.”
