Hip-hop and the NBA recently came together to provide fresh produce and turkeys to families in need–just in time for the Thanksgiving holiday.

Legendary music executive Tony Draper of Suave House Records and retired 12-year NBA veteran Ricky Davis led the way into Compton, Calif., for their nationwide Feed Your City Challenge, which encourages celebrities to participate in food drives in their home cities.

Hip-hop mogul and Compton native Dr. Dre is the latest to accept the challenge. “Unity is within us all. By us working together we can serve the underserved,” the mogul said in a statement. “Thanksgiving is a special time to bring people together; people shouldn’t have to worry about how they’re going to feed their family for the holidays, so we accepted the challenge from Tony Draper and his team to generate that unity for Compton during these difficult times.”

The event followed COVID-19 guidelines, with volunteers handing out supplies in full protective gear and attendees using a one-lane contactless drive-thru with a separate line for walk-ups to adhere to social distancing rules and regulations.

The Feed Your City Challenge is particularly timely as many Americans are feeling food insecurity, and as the spread of COVID-19 has severely impacted the nation. In addition to healthy food, attendees were given PPE supplies to help them through the pandemic.

The latest FYCC follows several highly successful events in New York, Atlanta, Chicago, Virginia, Miami, and in Los Angeles’ Baldwin Hills/Crenshaw neighborhood. Among the celebrities that have lent their names and time to the cause include Trey Songz, 2Chainz, Pusha T, G. Herbo, Rick Ross, Jhene Aiko, Mustard and Roddy Ricch.

Among those on hand in Compton included Nick Cannon, Danny “KP” Kilpatrick of Black Ink Crew and Compton Mayor Aja Brown. The event also featured free food from the Beyond Meat food truck, the Compton Cowboys and an appearance by The Hoop Bus, a traveling basketball group that has been raising awareness about the Black Lives Matter movement through basketball.
