‘When They See Us’ Receives Big Recognition with 16 Emmy Nominations; Viola Davis, Sterling K. Brown, Anthony Anderson Also Nominated

The powerful Netflix series “When They See Us” was clearly seen by the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences, who announced today that the series was nominated for an impressive 16 Emmy Nominations.

Among the nominations “When They See Us” received include outstanding limited series, outstanding lead actor in a limited series or movie for Jharrel Jerome, and outstanding lead actress in a limited series or movie nominations for Niecy Nash and Aunjanue Ellis.

In addition, Ava DuVernay also earned a nomination for directing and co-writing the series with Michael Starrbury.

“When They See Us” chronicles the true story of five teen boys of color who were wrongfully convicted in 1990 of a horrific rape and beating of a white female jogger in New York’s Central Park. Their convictions were later overturned after a convicted serial rapist confessed to the attack.

DuVernay took to Twitter today to thank the “Exonerated 5” for allowing her to tell their stories.

“Thank you to the real men for inviting me to tell their story,” DuVernay tweeted. “Thank you @TelevisionAcad for honoring the work. Saluting every single crew and cast member. And saluting Raymond, Korey, Antron, Yusef and Kevin. Love you, brothers.”

Jharrel Jerome’s portrayal of Korey Wise in the series has been met with praise since the series’ release in May. Wise was 16 at the time of the conviction and served his time in an adult facility, whereas his co-defendants were sent to juvenile detention. Nash also earned rave reviews for her portrayal of Delores Wise, Korey’s mother.

Brown, This is Us (Lead Actor in a Drama Series); Giancarlo Esposito, Better Call Saul (Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series); Mahershala Ali, True Detective (Lead Actor in a Limited Series or Movie); Anthony Anderson, Black-ish (Lead Actor in a Comedy Series) and Don Cheadle, Black Monday ((Lead Actor in a Comedy Series).
