All Def Movie Awards: Once Again Hip-Hop’s Answer to Oscar Diversity Controversy

The All Def Movie Awards, with its unconventional awards and unrehearsed acceptance speeches, was aired Sunday night on Fusion TV during the time of the Academy Awards telecast.

Now in its second year, the All Def Movie Awards were founded in 2016 by Russell Simmons in response to the #Oscarsowhite controversy, which called for greater diversity among Oscar nominees.  But unlike categories you would normally see at movie award ceremonies, the All Def Movie Awards features such categories as “Token Sidechick,” “Best Latino in a non-service industry role,” and  “Best Edges and Bad A** Boss Chick.”

This year’s All Def Movie Award winners included Andy Samberg’s “Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping,” which ironically won “Best Picture.” Also among the night’s winners include the movie “Keanu,” which won three awards.

Hosted by comedian/actor Mike Epps at the Belasco Theatre in downtown L.A. several days before the Oscars, the All Def Movie awards also recognized actor/director Ice Cube and rapper/actor L.L. Cool J with Lifetime Achievement Awards.

Also in attendance were Snoop Dogg and Amber Rose, who received the “Vanguard” Award.
