Artist Spotlight: Alex Porter Poised to Bring Real R&B Back with Powerful, Passionate New Music
Los Angeles-based singer/songwriter Alex Porter is the latest artist determined to bring R&B back.
“Today’s element of R&B doesn’t make you feel some type of way,” Porter said in a recent interview with Human Nature. “It’s been misinterpreted. They’re winning awards in categories they’re not defined in. We have rappers winning R&B awards.”
To Porter, good R&B music should make you feel—whether it’s in a happy, sober or romantic way.
“Music heals in a lot of different ways,” Porter said. “When you’re listening to Alex Porter’s music you’re going to get something that’s going to cause you to feel a better version of yourself. I’m singing music that someone can really adapt and relate to.”
For example, Porter said has music that can be played during a marriage proposal. “It’s music people can use in a variety of ways.”
Whether it’s to relax or being romantic with their partner, Porter’s song catalog has something for everyone. A few of his hit songs with fans include “Take This Chance”, “Set Up” and “The One.”
“My music is feel-good music,” Porter said. “It’s real R&B. It’s my passion. My passion speaks through my music and vocal ability.”
“It’s music that puts you in a type of mood,” he said. “You could be going through things. There’s nothing like turning on some real R&B music.”
Porter recalls many instances in which fans told him about how much his music impacted them. For example, Porter said a fan once told him that his music helped her when she was on the verge of suicide.
“She heard me singing and she said that in the midst of my voice, it gave her a reason to want to live again,” Porter says. “Music heals. That was the confirmation for me. God put me in the position to do what I’m doing.”
Music Skills Honed On the Road with Legends
Porter’s love of R&B/soul music started at a young age. Raised in the church, he started in the music business as a professional drummer when he was 15. In his youth, Porter played and toured as a drummer with such music legends as Whitney Houston, Mary Mary, Jay-Z, Mariah Carey, and Tina and Teddy Campbell.
Porter’s talents as a singer were even once acknowledged by the great Stevie Wonder, giving him the confidence that he could really succeed in the business.
Being around such greats on a regular basis allowed Porter to receive many lessons that still serve him well today.
“I learned a few things,” he said. “For example, you have to learn how to make constructive critics your best friends. In the midst of knowing that and being critiqued, I learned to adapt. Make constructive criticism your best friend. The energy you put into something, is the energy that you will get out of it. It will seep through your pores.”
Some of the best feedback he received on his music came from his mentor, legendary gospel singer/drummer Teddy Campbell, who told him to just keep it simple.
“When I sing, I can over do it,” Porter said. “He [Campbell] told me to simplify. “Make it simplistic. The attention span of their ears is short. Simplify. Don’t overplay where it sounds like ruckus.’”
Bringing Real R&B Back
Porter’s decades of experience in the music industry and close proximity to some of the all-time greats makes him the ideal person to bring R&B back to its heyday of the 1990s and early 2000s.
He’s set to release a new EP next year, which will contain his new single “Love and Happiness” featuring Donna Glitch.
“We’re bringing back some real R&B that’s going to take people by storm,” Porter said. “Everybody get ready. My music is about to bless people in a way that they haven’t been blessed before.”
