Colin Kaepernick Thanks Supporters in LA at Know Your Rights Foundation Private Dinner (PHOTOS/VIDEO)

Free agent NFL quarterback Colin Kaepernick, who sparked national anthem protests among professional athletes when he began kneeling at games to protest police brutality, was recently recognized at a private dinner at 10e Restaurant in downtown LA.

Held for his Know Your Rights Foundation charity, many supporters of Kaepernick were at the event, including attorney Mark Geragos and his firm Geragos & Geragos; entertainment executive and co-Founder of the BIG3 league Jeff Kwatinetz; basketball great Henry Bibby, NBA legend Charles Oakley and representatives from the University of California Irvine School of Law.

Kaepernick spoke briefly at the event, thanking supporters, including his partner, Nessa, who was also in attendance.

“This can’t be done alone,” he told supporters. ”This has to be done with all of us together and I wouldn’t be able to do it without all the great people that have been standing with me on all these issues and in this fight.”

L. Song Richardson, interim dean at the UC Irvine School of Law, also spoke at the event and shared why the school supports Kaepernick.

“The reason we are here today to support the Know Your Rights Foundation is because Colin has started a movement. He has started a new civil rights movement,” Richardson said.

Kaepernick, 30, remains unsigned after parting ways with the San Francisco 49ers in March. In October, he filed a grievance against the NFL, alleging that he remains unsigned due to collusion by owners for his protests.

The collusion allegations have generated Kaepernick addition support for his efforts. Recently, he was given the “Muhammad Ali Legacy Award” at Sports Illustrated’s Sportsperson of the Year ceremony. Earlier this month, he was also bestowed the Eason Monroe Courageous Advocate Award at the ACLU of Southern California’s annual Bill of Rights Dinner in Beverly Hills.

Know Your Rights is a free campaign for youth fully funded by Kaepernick to raise awareness on higher education, self-empowerment, and instruction to properly interact with law enforcement in various scenarios.
