Rising violent crime in Atlanta, business opportunities for Black women entrepreneurs and other issues of importance to the Women in Entertainment for Kasim Reed group were discussed during a recent campaign event for the Atlanta mayoral candidate, called the “The Peters St. Takeover.”
The discussions were a part of the event in which Reed visited several businesses along the popular Atlanta restaurant/nightlife strip, including Old Lady Gang, owned by the Real Housewives of Atlanta’s Kandi Burruss, and Frost Bistro, owned by Kirk and Rasheeda Frost from “Love & Hip-Hop Atlanta.
At each restaurant, Reed, who served as the city’s mayor from 2010-2018, took a moment to share his vision for a third term and to hear the issues of this influential constituency, which includes several prominent business owners.
In the discussion at OLG, Burruss brought up the lack of access to business opportunities for many Black women entrepreneurs and stressed to Reed the importance of the issue to the group.
“I think when the opportunities come, we’re not in the know…we don’t know what’s happening,” Burruss said. “I feel like it’s very important to have a relationship with the person who is running the city.”
An increase in violent crime was also a topic of discussion at the event, with Reed outlining several measures he would take reduce crime, while maintaining a stable relationship between police and the community.
“The bottom line is we can keep Atlanta safe and do it a way that’s consistent with our values,” Reed said.
A number of celebrities, entertainment executives, influencers and notable Black entrepreneurs were in attendance at event, including Yandy Smith (Love & Hip-Hop), Sierra Gates (Love & Hip-Hop), Stacia Mac (Polo G. mom/management), Angela Oakley (entrepreneur), Dina Marto (music executive) and Lashan Browning (TV/film producer), who was an organizer of the event.
