Legs Crossed for Peace
A group of wives and girlfriends of gang members from Pereira, Columbia went on a sex strike last year in protest of the growing violence in the city. Supported by the mayor’s office, the women said they will not have sex with mates until they give up the violence.
Pereira has one of the highest murder rates in Columbia, with a reported 97 murders for every 100,000 people. But after only 10 days the strike was called off. It’s unclear whether the strike had any impact on the violence. It’s also unclear whether it was the men or the women who were the scabs in this strike.
