Michelle Obama Raps About Going to College
First lady Michelle Obama though the Obama presidency has shown us several of her many talents. Now the First Lady can add another talent to her repertoire — rapping.
As part of the White House’s Reach Higher Initiative, which aims to inspire students to pursue an education beyond high school, the First Lady collaborated with comedy site CollegeHumor on a new music video promoting benefits of attending college.
Comedian Jay Pharaoh from Saturday Night Live was also featured on the track and performed most of the rapping. The video was produced the Gregory Brothers.
“South Side Chicago, we all know,” the first lady raps. “We had to do overtime every night to make it tomorrow. And everyone could really make their dream true. Hey, kid listenin’ in Michigan, that could be you!”
The Office of the First Lady in a statement said the video is designed to support her Better Make Room public awareness campaign, which began last month as part of her Reach Higher initiative.
Better Make Room is working to inspire Generation Z—that is, young people ages 14-19, to excel in high school and college. The campaign hopes to celebrate student stories in the same way celebrities and athletes are celebrated.
