Director F. Gary Gray recently received his star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, joining the ranks of such superstars as Marvin Gaye, Steven Spielberg and Richard Pryor on the famed Hollywood Boulevard in Los Angeles.
Gray, who is known for such films as “Straight Outta Compton,” “Set It Off” and “Friday” was humbled by the honor.
“This is an incredible, incredible honor. It really truly is,” he said. “To place this star even near, let alone alongside some of the greatest artists of all time, I really, really, truly am honored. Wow.”
His star ceremony celebrates Gray’s career directing films and music videos. On hand to support Gray were several actors he directed, including Ice Cute, Jamie Foxx, who he directed in 2009’s “Law Abiding Citizen,” and Tyrese Gibson and Vin Diesel, who he directed in blockbuster “The Fate of the Furious.”
“If you watch his filmography, if you watch his come up, if you watch his existence, it must be the definition of perseverance, it must be the definition of reaching for your dreams,” Diesel said.
Gray became known directing music videos for such artists at Ice Cube, who he directed in the “It Was a Good Day” video. He would go on to make his film directorial debut in the cult classic “Friday.”
He went on to director several more Ice Cube videos for Ice Cube and other artists including Dr. Dre, Whitney Houston and Jay-Z in addition to directing films such as The Negotiator, The Italian Job, Be Cool and Law Abiding Citizen.
One of Gray’s most notable early works was directing the music video for rapper Ice Cube’s hit “It Was a Good Day” in 1992. The pair would team up again for Gray’s directorial debut in the feature film Friday in 1995.
His latest movie “Men in Black: International” will be released next month.
