Essence once again celebrated some of the most talent women making waves in Hollywood at its 13th Annual Black Women in Hollywood Awards.
The luncheon brought together some of top movers and shakers in Hollywood, including many actresses, musicians, directors, industry executives, stylists and other guests in the entertainment industry.
Held at the Beverly Wilshire Hotel in Beverly Hills, this year’s theme focused on “celebrating women owning, expanding and transforming the art of storytelling.”
Among the women celebrated this year included actress Lashana Lynch, award-winning music video director Melina Matsoukas, actress, comedian, director and producer Niecy Nash, who received the Ford Vanguard Award, and co-executive producer/director/writer of “Pose” Janet Mock and cast members MJ Rodriguez, Indya Moore, Dominique Jackson, Angelica Ross and Hailie Sahar.
Issa Rae was on hand to present an award to Matsoukas, who has directed several episodes of “Insecure.” During her acceptance speech, Matsoukas candidly spoke about reclaiming her joy in the midst of injustice, in addition to thanking her mother, Beyoncé, Rae and Lena Waithe for their contributions, not only to her life, but also for her success.
In accepting her award, Nash discussed her gratitude with being “of service to the world.” Nash also spoke openly about her recent divorce and offered words of encouragement.
Kerry Washington was also on hand to present a special honorary tribute to the late iconic actress Diahann Carroll, who passed away last fall.
