Oprah Winfrey, Michael B. Jordan and other celebs celebrated the upcoming series on OWN “David Makes Man,” at a recent screening in NeueHouse in Hollywood.
The series is inspired by the youth years of “Moonlight” writer Tarell Alvin McCraney. Winfrey, Jordan and McCraney serve as Executive Producers of the drama, which casts a light on the childhood trauma McCraney endured and the power of his imagination to survive.
Set in South Florida, the series centers on David, played Akili McDowell, who is an impoverished 14-year-old prodigy, who is haunted by the death of his closest friend. He is relied upon by his hardworking mother, played by Alana Arenas, to find a way out of poverty and must choose between the streets that raised him or the higher education that may offer him a way out.
The series also stars Phylicia Rashad as David’s teacher Dr. Woods-Trap
McCraney is the author of the unpublished semi-autobiographical play “In Moonlight Black Boys Look Blue” upon which the Academy Award-Winning film was based.
“David Makes Man” premieres August 14 at 10 p.m. ET/PT on OWN: Oprah Winfrey Network.
