(PHOTOS) Anthony Anderson Recognized for Commitment to HBCUs at UNCF Mayor’s Masked Ball Kick-Off Reception

The HBCU experience was celebrated at the recent United Negro College Fund Los Angeles’ Homecoming reception, which recognized actor-comedian Anthony Anderson for his support of historically black colleges and universities.

Held at Casita in Hollywood, the 2020 “UNCF Homecoming: An HBCU Experience” served as the kickoff reception to the annual Mayor’s Masked Ball, which will be held next month in LA.

Anderson, who has provided scholarships for students pursuing an HBCU education through the UNCF/Anthony Anderson Scholarship, will be among the honorees at the Mayor’s Masked Ball.

At the homecoming kickoff reception, guests took a tour of the HBCU experience through the lens of Anderson’s journey from Los Angeles to becoming a student at Howard University.

For example, the event featured “step show” performances from members of the Delta Sigma Theta Sorority and Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, in addition to a memorable poem by Treesje Thomas. The event also featured remarks from a former recipient of the Anthony Anderson Scholarship, who discussed how important the scholarship was to her continuing her education.

The celebration marked UNCF’s 75-year history of service and its mission to support historically black colleges and universities.

Anderson created his scholarship after his appearance on the 34^th Annual UNCF “An Evening of Stars.” Students are awarded scholarships based on such criteria as their GPA status and need for financial assistance.

A number of actors, musicians and other entertainers were on hand for the reception, including Loni Love, MAJOR, Demetrius Shipp Jr., Marcus Scribner; Ser’Darius Blain; Ethan Henry Herisse, Roshon Fegan and Amin Joseph.
