The Weeknd’s Music Sales Catapulted by Electrifying Super Bowl Performance
The Weeknd’s dynamic halftime performance at this year’s Super Bowl has quickly jolted the sales of entire his music catalog.
On the day of his nine-song, 14-minute halftime set, Feb. 7., The Weeknd’s total music sales jumped by 385% in the U.S. to 36,500 copies sold compared to 7,500 sold on Feb. 6, according to Billboard, citing early reports from MRC Data.
Sales of The Weeknd’s albums also increased to 4,000 albums on Feb. 7, up 138% from less than 2,000 on Feb. 6, according to Billboard.
His best-selling song on Super Bowl day was “Blinding Lights,” which accounted for 29% of his sales. The Weeknd fittingly closed his set with that performance.
The Weeknd’s top album on the day of the Super Bowl was his recently released compilation album “The Highlights,” which features eight of the nine songs he performed at halftime.
Released Feb.5, “The Highlights,” 11 of The Weeknd’s 12 top 10 hits on the Billboard Hot 100, according to Billboard.
In front 25,000 socially distanced fans in Tampa’s Raymond James Stadium, the Canadian pop sensation performed some of his biggest hits, including “Starboy,” “Can’t Feel My Face,” and “Earned It.”
Produced by Emmy-nominated producer Jessie Collins, the performance generated rave reviews for its energy, innovative and camera effects. Though the final Super Bowl ratings are yet to be announced, the game is typically watched by more than 100 million viewers.
The Weeknd reportedly spent $7 million of his own money to be able to produce the memorable show, which saw him running through a hall of mirrors surrounded by face-bandaged dopplegangers and breaking the “fourth wall” while “House of Balloons/Glass Table Girls,” played.
