Tyler Perry, Bill and Hillary Clinton, Lenny Kravitz and More Pay Final Respects to Cicely Tyson at Private Memorial

Friends and family of Cicely Tyson came together for a private memorial yesterday at the legendary actress’ church in Harlem.

Held at the Abyssinian Baptist Church, which Tyson was a member at for 30 years, the memorial celebrated the life of the Emmy-winning and Oscar-nominated actress, who died Jan. 28 at age 96.

“The ceremony was beautiful,” Larry Thompson, Tyson’s manager for more than 40 years told the AP. “It was very Cicely Tyson: It was formal, it was humorous, it was sad, it was glorious.”

Rev. Calvin O. Butts, pastor of the historic church, told reporters Tyson was an example of “a life well lived and an example of how we all might live,” adding, “She was as much an ambassador for peace and love as anybody I can think of.”

Legendary gospel singer Bebe Winans sang “Stand” at the memorial at the request of Tyson before her death. A letter from rock singer Lenny Kravitz, who is Tyson’s godson, was also read to those in attendance, according to the AP.

Among the prominent guests in attendance, included former President Bill Clinton, former Secretary of State and 2016 Presidential Candidate Hillary Clinton, Tyler Perry, Valerie Simpson of Ashford & Simpson, and choreographer George Faison.

The public memorial follows a public viewing that was held a day earlier at the church. Fans traveled from as far as Los Angeles, Atlanta and other cities to pay their respects to the actress, waiting in line in the cold for a final glimpse of their Queen.
